350
YEARS
OF
SCIENCE
89
As provided by the new statutes the Académie
adopted in the early 2000s, half of the
newly elected members are less than 55
years old. This is a worthwhile asset in
keeping the Académie focused on the
future and allowing it to always provide
up-to-date and appropriate answers
to the questions society may have on
the development of science and its
applications.
Since the founding of the very first academy of
sciences — the
Accademia Dei Lincei
, in Rome,
1603 —, the number of national academies rapidly
expanded, first in Europe and then worldwide. In addition to the role they
play in their own countries, these academies, linked in interacademic networks, express their opinions on
global issues. Its renown and 350 year-long expertise still make the French Académie des Sciences an
essential partner for international scientific diplomacy.
