A scientific appeal for COP30 - The Academies of Science unite for climate action
News
40 Academies of Science are calling on COP 30, scheduled to meet from November 10 to 21, 2025 in Belem, Brazil, to take action to safeguard tropical forests.
Académie des sciences - Mathieu Baumer
Tropical forests, pillars of the global climate and refuges of biodiversity, are today threatened by deforestation, fires and climate change. These interconnected crises risk transforming these vital ecosystems, once carbon sinks, into net sources of emissions, exacerbating global warming and weakening food, water and health systems worldwide.
Faced with this urgency, the Academies of Science are calling for biodiversity to be placed at the heart of climate action: strengthening research and international cooperation, supporting local and indigenous knowledge, investing in education, and building science-based public policies. COP30 must mark a decisive turning point: protecting tropical forests means protecting life, justice and our common future.
