Tribute to Yvonne Choquet-Bruhat - A mathematician in Einstein's world

Event

The first woman elected to the Académie des Sciences in 1979, Yvonne Choquet-Bruhat has left her mark on the history of mathematics and theoretical physics. Her work, situated at the frontier between these two disciplines, paved the way for major advances, notably in the understanding of gravitational waves emitted when black holes merge, a field that has seen spectacular breakthroughs in astronomy in recent years.

The Académie des Sciences pays tribute to the scientific legacy of Yvonne Choquet-Bruhat (1923-2025) by organizing a day that will review her main field of research: the theory of general relativity.

This day is organized by Thibault Damour (member of the Académie des sciences, professor emeritus at the Institut des Hautes Etudes Scientifiques), Frank Merle (member of the Académie des sciences, professor at the Institut des Hautes Etudes Scientifiques and holder of the CY Cergy Paris Université chair of analysis) and Laure Saint-Raymond (member of the Académie des sciences, professor at the Institut des Hautes Etudes Scientifiques).

The morning session (9:30am-12:30pm) will take place under the Coupole of the Institut de France in the presence of high school students. After a brief history of the Académie des Sciences, three talks will present the mathematical and physical foundations of the theory of general relativity in a way that is accessible to all.

With the participation of:
Étienne Ghys, perpetual secretary of the Académie des sciences
Arthur Touati, CNRS research fellow, University of Bordeaux
Bérengère Dubrulle, member of the Académie des sciences, CNRS research director at CEA-Paris-Saclay
Roland Lehoucq , astrophysicist at CEA-Paris-Saclay

The afternoon session (2pm-5pm) will be held in the Académie des sciences' grand salle des séances. After a brief reminder of the links between Yvonne Choquet-Bruhat and the Académie des Sciences, five talks will present an educational overview of the theory of General Relativity from the physical, astrophysical and mathematical points of view, and the impact of Yvonne Choquet-Bruhat's work on this theory.

With the participation of:
Françoise Combes, president of the Académie des sciences
Thibault Damour, professor emeritus at IHES
Cécile Huneau, CNRS research director at École Normale Supérieure
Éric Gourgoulhon, CNRS research director at Observatoire de Paris
Piotr Chrusciel, Center for Theoretical Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences
