Although science has been the driving force of improvements to our living conditions and an expansion of our knowledge of the world, its place - as well as that of scientists - within society remains a major stake that is constantly being debated. This is particularly true in democratic societies, where public debate is of paramount importance.
Aware of the topicality of these subjects in both countries, as well as the remarkable contribution of Argentinian science on a global scale, the French and Argentinian Academies of Science have decided to jointly organise a symposium on 18, 19 and 20 November in Buenos Aires.
Building on their roles as catalysts for exchanges between science and society, and their missions to provide scientific advice to governments, the Academies hope to foster dialogue between scientists, their institutions, citizens and political leaders through a series of presentations highlighting the essential role of science in contemporary societies.
