Biography
Philippe Sansonetti is Professor Emeritus at the Institut Pasteur and Collège de France.
Member of the Académie des Sciences since 2001, he is Delegate of the Human Biology and Medical Sciences Section. A physician and researcher, he headed the Institut Pasteur's Molecular Microbial Pathogenesis Unit for 30 years. A pioneer in cellular microbiology, he elucidated the molecular basis of Shigella invasion of the intestinal epithelium, making this pathogen a model for the study of host-pathogen interactions. His work has led to the emergence of key concepts, including the detection of intracellular bacteria by cytosolic sensors, the hijacking of cellular functions, such as the cytoskeleton, by these bacteria and their ability to subvert immune defenses... . He has also developed several shigellosis vaccine candidates, one of which is currently in advanced clinical phase in the field. More recently, his research has made a decisive contribution to understanding the molecular dialogues between the intestinal mucosa and the microbiome, with major implications for epithelial homeostasis, dysbiosis, inflammation and colorectal cancer.
