Biography

François Baccelli is Director of Research Emeritus at the French National Institute for Research in Computer Science and Control (INRIA).

François Baccelli's research lies at the interface between mathematics and communications. His mathematical work focuses on probability theory, mainly on the study of point processes, random graphs and stochastic geometry. He has also contributed to the study of dynamics on these random structures. In particular, he has contributed to the development of the max-plus algebraic approach for the analysis of discrete-event systems, whose dynamics are defined by point processes on graphs. His main contributions in the field of communications are centered on information theory, flow control in the Internet and the modeling of large-scale information transport networks. In particular, he has developed a new class of models combining stochastic geometry and information theory for wireless communications networks, which are now widely used for the analysis and optimization of these systems. It is interesting to note that the mathematical foundations initially developed by François Baccelli for the analysis of communications networks are also being used today to make progress in understanding dynamics in other classes of large stochastic networks, such as neural networks or social networks.
