Antoine d'Abbadie's foundation

A large mansion constructed like a mediaeval castle, Abbadia Château was bequeathed to the Academy, at the end of the last century, by Antoine d'Abbadie (1810-1897). Explorer, geographer, linguist and astronomer all in one, he devoted his entire life to adventure and to science and was a Member of the Academy of Sciences (1852-1897).

Abbadia Château, constructed by the architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, is an example of XIXth century neo-Gothic art. Its interior decoration has a distinctly orientalist feel.

This Château is open to visitors (see phone number and mail address for information).
